Summary

This position is available for licensed Registered Nurses (RN). The Lab Nurse is responsible for reviewing, organizing, and managing patient lab orders and results, ensuring timely documentation, communication, and follow-up. Under the direction of nursing leadership, the Lab Nurse performs designed clinical, technical, and clerical tasks related to lab management, pharmacy coordination, and patient care workflows. This role requires strong critical-thinking skills, effective communication, and proficiency in clinical software systems to support safe and accurate patient care.

Hourly Rate: $34/hr - $42/hr (DOE)

Schedule: (Remote) Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm CST specifically

Location: Must reside in the U.S. and work the above schedule but is not a requirement to reside in a CST state

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Include the following. Other duties may be assigned, as necessary.

  • Review, document, and manage patient lab results in clinical platforms based on infusion schedule and per MD order.
  • Utilize clinical platforms to complete notes, track workflows, and ensure timely documentation.
  • Monitor queues in clinical platform to ensure timely review of lab results, pending items, and follow-up tasks.
  • Recognize trends or changes in lab values and escalate concerns per protocol.
  • Identify and respond to abnormal and critical lab results within required timeframes and follow established workflow algorithms.
  • Assess patients by phone as needed, especially when reviewing abnormal or critical lab results, and escalate concerns per protocol.
  • Follow up on patients as needed, including those overdue for labs, to ensure timely completion.
  • Coordinate lab draws as needed and follow up to ensure completion and receipt of results.
  • Participate in the monthly on-call rotation for critical lab results.
  • Receive verbal orders and document per protocol.
  • Report lab results to appropriate personnel and escalate concerns as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information and comply with HIPAA and organizational privacy requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with pharmacy, nursing staff, lab facilities, physician offices, and the interprofessional team through clinical platforms.
  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and clinical protocols.

  • Strong critical-thinking skills with the ability to interpret lab results and follow workflow          algorithms.
  • Participate in department QA activities as requested.
  • Attend designated departmental meetings as scheduled.
  • Effective care coordination skills, including communication with nursing supervisors, pharmacy staff, and physicians.
  • Ability to participate in an on-call rotation for critical lab results.
  • Proficient in the use of computers and other devices.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license, maintain automobile insurance coverage and have access to a reliable automobile.
  • Perform other tasks or duties as requested.

Education and/or experience

  • College degree/certification required or equivalent experience.
  • RN: 2 years (Required)
  • ER/ICU/Infusion: 1 year preferred (critical thinking)
  • Infusion experience in a hospital or Home Health setting: 1 year (Preferred)

This job generally operates in a clerical office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phone, photocopiers, and fax machines. While performing the duties of this position, the employee may travel by automobile and be exposed to changing weather conditions.
